Swenglish as a second language

As a part of my sociolinguistic class we did a survey about attitudes to different language phenomenons. My group focused on Swedes usage of English loanwords, and asked 57 people to list whatever English words they use themselves. This is the compilation of the results. The words repeated several times were mentioned by so many people. Some words are turned half Swedish, inflected according to Swedish grammar, some aren't even English to start with...

Beautiful fall

Apple Savor

Fruit are better off in people's bellies than rotting away on the ground. Right? Picking apples is also one of the loveliest things about fall. It helps create that cozy fall feeling.

My school used to be a military training base and right by it is this huge house where the officer used to live. Now it is standing there abandoned and empty, losing more of its former beauty every day. Behind the house is an enormous garden with all sorts of apple trees, as abandoned as the house . . .

Mirror Faces and Huggers

The best thing of keeping your childhood friends into adultness is that they know everything about you. You never have to explain how you think or why you feel a certain way. They just know by the look of your face. The backside, on the other hand, is that they remember all embarrassing moments, all stupid things you have done, as well as the silly things you still do.

Stina and I have known each other since first grade. For a while we were bitter enemies, but through our teenage years we grew very close. Since then she has been like a sister.

Stina giving the mirror face
Stina has an unhealthily good memory. This is supposedly my "mirror face," a phoney face I (used to) make when looking into mirrors. Stinas mother and sambo apparently find it very funny. I deny all knowledge about the matter.

Home is Not Where You Live, but Where They Understand You

I've had a great weekend at home.

At home.

It's funny how ones perspective of what home is changes over time. When mom left the house, I lost access to my childhood home. From then home has more been this whole town, especially since I moved away. When I go home, I go here. Although my apartment, my present home, is not here. Luckily I have the best friends and family who make me feel right at home the second I walk through the door, no matter how long it has been. I'm so grateful I'm not left out of that. Thanks.

I wonder what home will be a couple of years from now. It's both scary and exiting not to know.

Lucky Friday the 13th

This Friday the 13th turned out to be a happy, happy day :-)

For almost three weeks I've been waiting for the TOEFL test result, and today it came! I must say I've been nervous, even though I had a pretty good feeling... You just never know. If I'd done terribly I would not even have been able to apply. On the other hand, if my scores were good enough I'd automatically qualify for a scholarship. So I waited, worried, waited and worried. Till this morning.

Guess what?! I did really well!!! There were four parts of the test, each with a maximum score of 30. Somehow I got 28 – 28 – 29 – 28! Not in my wildest dreams did I think I would get as high as that. Also, the 29 was in the speaking section, the part I was most nervous about in forehand.

The limit for a scholarship was 77.

Today I'm proud of myself
:-)

A little of this, a little of that ... and a touch of heaven

Walking around
Just walking around a new neighbourhood is interesting, even more so in a new country. I of course see lots of things differently since I'm used to something else. Anyway, here are small glimpses of what we have around the corner from my new home.

A sidewalk is a sidewalk is a sidewalk.
The truth is that sidewalks are very different in Sweden compared to this. They are almost always much wider, made of asphalt, and connected in huge networks covering all parts of towns and cities. That means you can basically walk to anywhere or get there by bike. Sidewalks are on my top three list of things I miss from home when I'm in the states. I would give anything to be able to ride my bike to school in the spring.

They don't look like this at home, thereof the picture.

Misty Wood circle. That's where you need to go if you want to stop by :-)

Not in the neighbourhood, but in a beautiful park not too far away - my favourite tree! I love the carved names on the trunk and how the roots crawl all over the rocks.

Pet Haven - where pets go religious
If I ever die I hope they send me out to sea on a burning raft. Way too few do it that way. Some even bury their four footed friends with grave stones and everything. Just down the street from u s is Dulaney Pet Haven.

If the draft thing doesn't work out I want my hand print on the grave stone, just like Madchen.

How sweet is this? A cat, a dog and a mouse together in eternal rest.

Hm... A religious dog? People ask the strangest things of their past away pets. Wherever she is I hope Winnie chase balls and play with other dead dogs instead of talking to Jesus.

Schmaltz modeling

The most appreciative object for my camera is Schmaltz. He shows unbelievable patience with my getting-to-know-my-camera-and-therefore-taking-the-same-picture-over-and-over-again stage. He's a photographers dream and every shot comes out beautiful (the ones that don't are usually my fault). Also, he never, unlike most two legged people, makes those false, forced smiles that take the authentic out of so many pictures. Overall he's my favorite little model, even though it takes crawling around on the floor and a lot of sweet talking to keep him happy.
